Zambia's Minister of Technology and Science, Felix Mutati, has announced plans to open a smartphone factory in the country by June 2024. This initiative aims to reduce smartphone prices for citizens, fostering inclusivity in connectivity. Mutati highlighted that increased smartphone access would benefit fintech startups by enabling wider access to their services. In addition, the government plans to construct over 100 community digital centers to enhance connectivity. This move comes as Zambia seeks to improve financial inclusion, especially in the use of mobile money services. The government had previously zero-rated imports of telecoms equipment, including smartphones, to encourage investment in the ICT sector.
