Three-quarters of the world’s extreme poor live in rural areas, a majority of whom depend on farming for their livelihoods and food security. In Africa, the problem is especially acute, with the World Bank indicating that 87% of the world’s poorest will be concentrated on the continent by 2030. Building sustainable agricultural systems is therefore essential to achieve the No Poverty and Zero Hunger objectives encompassed in the first two of the United Nations’ (UN) 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
