Airtel Nigeria launches 5G mobile network to intensify competition in the Nigerian telecoms market
Airtel Nigeria is launching its 5G mobile network, aiming to increase competition in the Nigerian telecoms market and enhance its market share. The introduction of Airtel's 5G network aligns with the Nigerian government's digital transformation goals, as it aims to boost broadband adoption. Currently, Airtel holds 27.01% of the national mobile subscriber base. The move into the 5G space allows Airtel to compete in the ultra-broadband segment, which has been dominated by MTN since September 2022. Airtel acquired a 5G spectrum and additional spectrum for its 4G network in January, investing $316.7 million. The Airtel 5G Router supports simultaneous connection of up to 64 devices, offers fast speeds, and provides network stability. Airtel's 5G service is initially compatible with brands such as Huawei, iPad, iPhone, Samsung, Tecno, and Xiaomi. Users can check their device's 5G compatibility through specific settings on Android or Apple iPhones. To enable 5G on devices, users need to adjust settings accordingly.
