Amidst sanctions, this AI chatbot is offering Zimbabweans an alternative to ChatGPT
Zimbabwean developer Kuda Musasiwa and his team have created alternative AI chatbots called ZivAI and DanAI to address the barred access to OpenAI's ChatGPT in Zimbabwe. Due to sanctions imposed by the US government and European Union, Zimbabwe is unable to access ChatGPT. Musasiwa built ZivAI using the open-source API to provide a chatbot alternative for the people of Zimbabwe. ZivAI offers functionalities beyond ChatGPT, including image and PDF generation, news, and e-commerce capabilities. The team has also integrated a store into the platform to onboard vendors in Zimbabwe and the region. Another chatbot, DanAI, aims to cover the rest of Africa in a relatable African context. The motivation behind building these chatbots was to solve the challenges faced by Zimbabweans in accessing global products and payment gateways due to sanctions. The chatbots have garnered traction, with over 18,000 users and 19,000 logins via LinkedIn and Twitter. Musasiwa believes that generative AI chatbots are advancing rapidly and sees them as the future of computing and productivity. He emphasizes the importance of Africans participating in the development of these technologies to represent their languages and perspectives on the international stage.
