Google will prevent apps that offer loans to individuals from gaining access to their photos, videos, and contacts in a bid to address predatory behaviour from some lenders.
Google has announced a new policy to stop predatory lending apps from accessing users' personal data in a bid to tackle harassment and intimidation. The policy, which comes into effect on May 31, bans lending apps from accessing user contacts or photos. The move comes in response to widespread reports of harassment in countries such as Kenya, India and Nigeria, where debt collectors have targeted borrowers and sent manipulated photos to their friends and family. Google previously blocked hundreds of personal loan apps and introduced rules to ban unlicensed loan apps from the Play Store. The new policy affects binary options, cryptocurrencies and personal loans.
