Electric vehicle and smart battery design company Spiro has teamed up with the Ugandan government to deploy more than 140,000 electric two-wheelers and 3,000 charging stations across Uganda by 2028. The plan will see Spiro set up an electric motor assembly plant in Uganda's capital, Kampala, with the aim of fostering affordability through local production. It is hoped this will add 9,000 jobs to Uganda's economy. Ugandan president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni promised to give brand-new electric motorcycles to current commercial riders for free in his year-end address. Spiro claims to have deployed 4,500 electric motorcycles in Benin, Togo and Rwanda since 2022, and plans to expand into 10 other African countries by 2030.
