Here’s why Flutterwave accounts were frozen in Kenya
A Nairobi High Court has placed a 14-day lien on 45 Flutterwave bank accounts and 10 mobile money accounts in Kenya following a petition by investors who claim to have been defrauded by a Ponzi scheme called 86 Football Technology Ltd (86FB). The investors allege that Flutterwave and 86FB collaborated to swindle them out of $12.04 million. Flutterwave has confirmed that some accounts have been frozen but stated that it was a procedural matter and that they had proactively notified merchants involved with 86FB to cease processing payments. Flutterwave had previously suspended Racksterly, another Ponzi scheme, from using its platform. This recent court case marks the second attempt by the aggrieved investors to sue Flutterwave in Kenya. After the 14-day lien expires, further directions will be given on how to proceed with the case. Flutterwave has responded to the situation by suing 86FB on criminal defamation charges and continues its efforts to obtain a payment license in Kenya.
