Inside Gebeya's plan to support 100 existing marketplaces in Ethiopia, and across Africa
Ethiopian talent marketplace Gebeya aims to bridge Africa's tech talent shortage by providing training and acting as a platform between technology talent and companies. It has worked with talent in Ethiopia, as well as Kenya, Nigeria and the UK, and acquired US-based software and consulting company Coders4Africa in 2018. Gebeya's revenue exceeded $1m that year, and it recently secured an undisclosed Series A funding round to evolve into a marketplace-as-a-service provisioner. This means it will support existing marketplaces by partnering with companies such as Lifeline Addis Home-based Healthcare and Eshi Express, among others. The move is part of the firm's five-year Mesirat programme, aimed at equipping 100 Ethiopian entrepreneurs with multi-sided gig marketplaces, with the potential to scale across Africa.
