African startups clashing with regulators due to non-compliance are often faced with far-reaching consequences, including some that render their businesses defunct or inoperable in some markets โ€“ as was experienced by some scale-ups last year.

Lawyers Hub, a legal tech startup in Kenya, has launched a legal and tech accelerator program to help African startups navigate compliance issues and establish proper structures. The program provides training on financials, taxation laws, intellectual property, fundraising, scaling, and more. The 12-week program targets seed-stage startups and is delivered in partnership with development agencies. In its third year, the program has attracted 200 startups from across the continent. Linda Bonyo, the founder of Lawyers Hub, emphasizes the importance of structure in startups and highlights the need for founders to separate themselves from the business. Lawyers Hub also runs a fellowship program to upskill traditional lawyers on digital policy. Bonyo's expertise in digital law and data governance has led to her nomination to the World Economic Forum's Global Council on the future of Technology Policy.
