Kunda Kids secures $700K to teach African history to kids in the diaspora
The University of Manchester has highlighted a significant lack of diversity in children's books published in the UK, with only 7% of books between 2017 and 2019 featuring characters from minority ethnic groups, including those of African descent. This disparity is notable considering that 33.5% of the school population in the UK belongs to these minority groups. In response to this gap, Oladele and Louisa Olafuyi founded Kunda Kids, an edtech and publishing company that produces African history books for children. The aim is to provide materials that teach children about African culture and history in a positive and engaging manner, going beyond the limited narratives typically taught in schools. Kunda Kids has already sold over 25,000 books and their app has been downloaded in over 130 countries. To further expand their efforts, the company recently secured $700,000 in a pre-seed funding round led by Zrosk Investment Management and involving investors such as Voltron Capital and Argentil Capital. The funds will be used to develop the Kunda Kids mobile app and collaborate with creative talent from across the African diaspora. Kunda Kids is also launching "Kunda & Friends," a music-led 3D animation series set in Africa that aims to provide children with entertaining content while imparting prosocial life lessons. The series features diverse characters and draws inspiration from African music genres. The first four episodes of "Kunda & Friends" will be released on May 29th, 2023, with additional episodes to follow.
