Load shedding might impact South Africa's internet addiction
According to a report by VPN platform Atlas VPN, internet users around the world spent an average of 6 hours and 37 minutes online each day in 2022, which represents a decrease of 4.8% compared to the previous year when the pandemic lockdowns were in place. The report revealed that South Africans are the most addicted to the internet, spending an average of 9 hours and 38 minutes online each day, which is three hours more than the global average. In addition, the report shows that Egypt is the only other African country in the top 30 countries with the most internet users. Despite the high internet addiction in South Africa, the country's internet penetration rate is currently around 72.3%, with the government intending to provide internet access to every home by next year. However, scheduled power blackouts in the country could decrease internet usage, as many fibre users lose their connection when the electricity returns. Telecom company MTN South Africa is investing in alternative power sources to reduce the impact of power cuts on their network availability during load-shedding.
