Mauto's e-motorcycles are changing Benin's bike-taxi scene
Mauto, an e-bike startup based in Cotonou, Benin, is aiming to replace fuel-guzzling motorbike taxis with green alternatives in the country and potentially across Africa. Mauto launched its electric motorbikes, imported from China, in 2020, and has deployed more than 2,000 bikes so far with plans to convert 100% of the country’s petrol-bike taxis to e-bikes. The startup is preparing to set up an assembly plant in the special economic zone of Glo-Djigbé near Cotonou in the coming months. The company is also building battery swap stations across the city to combat a lack of charging infrastructure. Mauto is operational in Togo and will expand in Rwanda this year, with plans to operate in other African countries including the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
