Meta faces third lawsuit in Kenya as moderators claim illegal sacking, blacklisting
43 content moderators who worked for Meta's Kenya-based content moderation partners, Sama and Majorel, have filed a lawsuit in Kenya alleging "unlawful termination" by Sama, and "discrimination" by Majorel against Sama's previous employees. The petition was filed before the employment and labour relations court, and claims that the moderators were dismissed in an unlawful manner without redundancy notices. They further claim that Meta has instructed Majorel to blacklist content moderators that previously worked at Sama, causing them to be denied jobs at Majorel. Sama has responded by saying it followed Kenyan law in every aspect and often went above and beyond what is required, and that no lawfully owed compensation is being withheld from any employee. Meta and Sama previously faced a lawsuit in Kenya last year, where they were accused of forced labor and human trafficking, union busting and failure to provide "adequate" mental health and psychosocial support by a former content moderator.
