Nigerian artistes’ revenue on Spotify grew by 74% in 2022, raking over ₦11 billion 🇳🇬 🎶💲💲
In 2022, Nigerian artists experienced a significant boost in revenue from Spotify, with their earnings surpassing ₦11 billion, marking a 74% increase from the previous year. This growth outpaced the 64% revenue expansion of the entire Nigerian music industry for the same period. The data was released by Spotify on its Afrobeats website. Notably, the number of Nigerian artists generating more than ₦5 million and ₦10 million in royalties from Spotify alone also increased by almost 25% in 2022.
Spotify's Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, emphasized the company's dedication to supporting professional musicians and helping them sustain their livelihoods. A significant portion of Nigerian artists generating ₦1 million or more distributed their music on Spotify using platforms like DistroKid, Vydia, and ONErpm.
Spotify reported that the most streamed Nigerian artists on its platform included Burnaboy, Wizkid, BNXN (formerly Buju), Davido, Asake, Drake, Fireboy DML, Kizz Daniel, Omah Lay, and Rema. Among female artists, Ayra Starr and Tems stood out. The surge in the popularity of Afrobeats music contributed to this growth, with more than 13 billion Afrobeats streams on Spotify in 2022. This growth has been attributed to increased collaboration between Nigerian musicians and global artists and the genre's resonance across different cultures.
Spotify launched in Nigeria in February 2021, witnessing substantial growth in the average number of artists streamed per user and the creation of numerous user-generated playlists by Nigerian music enthusiasts.
