Open AI underpaid 200 Kenyans to perfect ChatGPT—then sacked them
It is reported that San-Francisco-based AI development firm OpenAI used 200 underpaid Kenyans to remove racist, sexist, and violent content from its language model ChatGPT-3. The project was completed in November and the Kenyan-based contractor Sama, who was responsible for the content moderation, subsequently closed its Nairobi office and made all 200 employees jobless. The content moderators were paid between $1.32 and $2 per hour, significantly less than the minimum wage in California and the federal state. The work was also traumatic for the employees who had to watch videos of harmful content and analyze descriptions of hate speech, sexual violence, and violence. OpenAI is now facing criticism for its treatment of the workers and its outsourcing of content moderation services.
