South African VC firm Kalon Venture Partners, which invests in digital disruptive technologies, is to raise a US$50 million fund which will see it make investments outside of South Africa for the first time.
South African venture capital firm Kalon Venture Partners is raising a $50m fund to invest in digital disruptive technologies across Africa. The company, which has previously backed 11 South African tech start-ups, including marketing firm Mobiz, payments company Ozow, proptech firm Flow and cybersecurity start-up Sendmarc, plans to seek institutional investors for the fund. It is also planning to hire staff in the markets where it invests to ensure it understands cultural differences and product-market fit. CEO Clive Butkow said that he did not believe South Africans could run businesses in African countries such as Nigeria and Kenya, where he said retailers, telcos and banks had failed.
