Sudan’s war is crippling its budding tech ecosystem
The tech ecosystem in Sudan is facing significant challenges due to the ongoing war in the country. Many tech operators and startups in Khartoum, the capital, have been forced to flee their offices, leaving behind inventory and disrupted operations. The connectivity infrastructure is also struggling, with unreliable telecom operators and fintechs. Despite these difficulties, some tech operators are hopeful for the future and have relocated to other regions and neighboring countries. Sudan, with its large population and youthful demographic, has the potential to be a thriving technology market, but it has been hindered by decades of civil wars and militant uprisings. The recent war has further disrupted the tech ecosystem, causing loss of inventory, deserted offices, and inactive bank accounts. However, Sudanese founders who have fled the country maintain their entrepreneurial spirit and seek opportunities in the countries they have relocated to, such as the UAE and Egypt. Building a stable Sudanese tech community in the diaspora opens up funding opportunities and creates a pathway for investment in Sudan as the diaspora ecosystem matures. Despite the challenges, some startups still operating in Sudan see the war as a catalyst for expanding into neighboring markets. While the current situation is difficult, there is optimism that tech innovation in Sudan will endure and thrive in the long run.
