Tech Founders Investing in Nollywood: Unlocking 3x Returns in African Film Industry 🎬 🇳🇬

Nollywood is on a path to globalisation, and the deep pockets of tech operators will help achieve global success. On August 25, Editi Effiòng, a Nollywood director, shared a list of executive producers for his film, The Black Book. It featured African startup founders and investors like Nadayer Enegesi (Eden Life), Olumide Soyombo (Voltron Capital), and Ezra Olubi (Paystack). While this is not the first time African tech players have invested in film projects, the long list of executive producers for The Black Book has shown that tech operators are increasingly funding film projects.

Nollywood, the Nigerian film industry, is gaining global attention, and tech investors are flocking to support its growth. This surge in funding is addressing long-standing issues such as inadequate financing and low-quality productions. Streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime, along with local studios, are elevating Nollywood's film quality, leading to increased box office success.

Tech investors, including startup founders and venture capitalists, are recognizing the long-term financial potential of Nollywood. They see opportunities in streaming platforms and cinemas, with an emphasis on driving profitability in the industry. Investments from these tech players are reshaping how filmmakers approach their projects, emphasizing financial sustainability alongside creativity.

Challenges, such as the lack of infrastructure and technical talent, still hinder the industry's growth. Investors are stepping in to provide solutions, including building studios and supporting talent development initiatives. Patient capital is seen as a key to overcoming these obstacles.

Returns on investment in Nollywood vary from project to project but can be quite lucrative, with some investors seeing returns of up to 3x. This financial backing empowers filmmakers to pursue more ambitious projects and experiment with different genres.

In the long run, increased investment from tech founders is expected to improve Nollywood's global standing and diversify funding sources, reducing the industry's reliance on personal relationships for financing. The industry still faces challenges related to distribution and gatekeeping, but the influx of tech capital is helping pave the way for a brighter future.
