The exciting relationship between women and mobile money in Africa
Mobile money has played a significant role in empowering women across Sub-Saharan Africa by improving financial inclusion. Despite gender inequality across the continent, research by the World Bank shows that mobile money has enabled Kenyan women to move away from subsistence farming and towards business and retail, helping alleviate poverty in the country. Female entrepreneurs benefit from mobile money with a 19.8% increase in the likelihood of female-led businesses receiving investments from outside sources, allowing them to invest more in fixed assets and business expansion. Advances in interoperability mean that mobile money is easier to use and has massive potential benefits for female entrepreneurs to sell their products across borders.
