The split of the African plate could gift six landlocked countries a coastline
The African continent is slowly splitting into two sub-continents along the East African Rift Valley, with the Somali and Nubian tectonic plates disintegrating from each other and the Arabian plate pulling away. This continental rift will take between five to 10 million years, and will create a new ocean basin between the sub-continents. Landlocked countries such as Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, and Zambia would gain coastlines, and Kenya, Tanzania, and Ethiopia would have two territories each. While the splitting will cost millions of dollars in evacuation, it will create huge advantages such as the reduction in international logistical expenses and creation of shipping and fishing industries that did not exist before.
