As part of its efforts to be a zero-emission company by 2040, Uber is engaging with African governments to develop policies that will enable the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).
Uber's chief business development officer, Jennifer Vescio, has said the ride-hailing firm could meet its target of becoming a zero-emission platform by 2040, but only if partners such as policymakers and car manufacturers adopt electric vehicle technology quickly. Meanwhile, in Africa, Uber plans to ensure 25% of kilometres driven by its cars are electric by 2030, beginning with South Africa. However, according to a report, the country would have to ban the sale of new internal combustion vehicles by 2035 and shift at least 15% of road traffic to rail to meet its climate commitments.
