Web 3 

Web 3, also known as Web 3.0, is the third generation of the World Wide Web characterized by decentralized and trustless systems. 
 
It is built on an open blockchain network, using it to protect your data, and it is not owned and controlled by large entities. 
 
It can be termed as the decentralized internet that focuses on individual or consumer ownership stakes in platforms and applications. 
 
It represents a more intelligent iteration of the internet, where websites and applications can intelligently process information using technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), Big Data, Decentralized Ledger Technology (DLT), and other advanced methods. 
 
It promises to uphold the utopian values of equality, transparency, information access, as well as full privacy over shared data without third-party censorship. 
 
Although it is currently being built, it will require some time before its full utilization and adoption.
 
Web 2 

Web 2 is the version of the internet widely being used. It is the participative social web with a focus on reading and writing content. 
 
It does not refer to any specific technical upgrades to the internet but a shift in how the internet is being used. 
 
The publication of articles and comments, increasing engaged content creation, and participation through the creation of accounts on different sites are all possible because of Web 2. 
 
It led to the emergence of web applications and self-publishing platforms such as Wazoplus, WordPress, Medium, Substack, along with social media platforms like Twitter and LinkedIn. 
 
It is what global behemoths like Google (now under Alphabet), Facebook (now Meta), Uber, Amazon are originally built on.
 
Web 1 

This is the first generation of the World Wide Web, often referred to as the read-only web. 
 
It emerged shortly after the Cold War, in the 1960s, with the initial purpose of providing information sharing and featuring online content delivery. 
 
It is primarily a one-way publishing medium with minimal or no user interaction. 
 
It began as an information place for businesses to broadcast their information and only allowed users to search for information and read it.

We can say Web 1 gave rise to information sharing mainly by governments, businesses, and corporate bodies. 
 
Web 2 made social interactions and content generation possible for everyone, and Web 3 focuses on data privacy and ownership, transparency, and equality.

It's often used to create transparent and secure ledgers, commonly linked with Blockchain. 
 
This technology forms a foundation that aligns with the principles of a decentralized and user-friendly internet envisioned in Web 3.
 
Artificial Intelligence (AI) 
 
AI refers to the ability of a computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings through the simulation of human intelligence processes. 
 
It contributes to personalized user experiences within Web 3 applications by analyzing user behavior, preferences, and tailoring content and services to individual users. 
 
AI is key to achieving a smarter version of the internet.
 

Machine Learning (ML) 
 
This is a subset of artificial intelligence (AI) that focuses on creating systems capable of learning and improving by using the data they take in. 
 
ML, through analyzing data, identifying patterns, and making predictions, plays a role in developing more intelligent and flexible systems in Web3.

Web 3 is quite broad and encompasses a lot. Like our universe, some components are miniature parts of others, such as Decentralized Protocols, Smart Contracts, Consensus Mechanisms, and the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS).

<h3>I know, I know you are probably thinking Distributed Ledger Technology, doesn't that sound like the Blockchain? 
 
Yes it does but it isn't the “Blockchain”. 
 
It's like stumbling upon somebody you haven't met for ages and you are like “Charles is that you” and he looks at you, “am not Charles, Charles is my Dad, am David”. 
 
You are shocked, and you are like, you look just like him. How is Charles doing? 
 
Over time David becomes your main interest. Your focus shifts to David. 
 
This is exactly what happened to Distributed Ledger Technology. 
 
The Blockchain which is a product of DLT became the main attraction at least to the Public. 
 
Now just like you would ask, how is Charles doing? 
 
What is Distributed Ledger Technology? 
 
In my previous article I define it as an encompassing phrase describing technologies and systems crafted to disperse and document information throughout a network without relying on a central authority. 
 
It records asset transactions by storing their details on a ledger which is then distributed to a network of computers referred to as nodes. 
 
The Blockchain is an example of DLT but not all DLTs are referred to as the Blockchain.</h3>

History of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT)</h3>
<h3> 
In the past data was recorded on paper or in various software systems and then combined into a central database on a regular basis. 
 
Imagine a company with multiple departments each keeping its own data which is only added to a central ledger when necessary. 
 
This traditional practice of storing data in different areas within organizations shows that the idea of a distributed ledger is not new. 
 
In the 1990s a milestone was reached where computers and users in different locations could work together to solve problems and send solutions to a central location. 
 
This is similar to what we have today with applications like “Codeanywhere”, “Google Docs” and similar applications which make use of Cloud computing. 
 
Currently advances in data science, computing, software, hardware and related technologies have greatly improved ledger capabilities. 
 
With data becoming more accessible to many users, the need for verification of changes became clear. 
 
To address this, computer and data scientists developed programs that reduce the need for manual data auditing. 
 
These programs use automation and data encryption techniques to verify database transactions or changes in a database's state. 
 
This process referred to as Consensus involves automated agreement by the majority on the validity of a transaction where a transaction represents a change made to a database's state. 
 
Workings of DLT</h3>
<h3> 
DLT works by maintaining a decentralized and synchronized record of transactions across multiple locations or nodes. The most popular form of DLT is the blockchain. 
 
It operates on a network of nodes that all have a copy of the same ledger. 
 
Unlike traditional databases with a single central authority or database, each node has equal importance which eliminates the need for a central point of control. 
 
DLTs store information using cryptography in a secure and accurate manner. 
 
This information can be accessed using “keys” and cryptographic signatures and once stored it can become an immutable database. 
 
The rules of the network written into the coding of the database govern the ledger. 
 
Although it must be noted that DLTs are not usually immutable unless programmed to be so, like the Blockchain.</h3>

Uses of DLT</h3>
<h3> 
DLT transforms financial transactions by doing away with middlemen, cutting expenses, stopping fraud, and speeding up procedures like international money transfers. 
 
It offers better tracking of commodities from sourcing to delivery which helps supply chain management. 
 
DLT offers Improved identity verification which contributes to safer management and lower fraud. 
 
Clinical trial management, medication traceability, and patient record exchange can be improved by DLT. 
 
Voting methods that are digital become transparent, safe, and have unchangeable records as a result of DLT. 
 
DLT is used to track property documents and asset ownership. 
 
Blockchain is used by cryptocurrencies like Ethereum and Bitcoin to enable safe, decentralized transactions.</h3>

Examples of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) 
 
On the top of the list we have the Blockchain. 
 
The Blockchain, the technology behind cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Etherum, Solana, e.t.c, is the most popular and widely used DLT. 
 
It utilizes cryptography (complex mathematical formulas) to ensure security with information stored in Blocks. 
 
Next we have Hashgraph. 
 
Hashgraph is an alternative to the Blockchain, which promises to provide faster transaction processing speeds, reduced transaction fees, and higher levels of security through a proprietary system called aBFT (Asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerance). 
 
The aBFT ensures security by recording each event that occurs on the network and compares past versions of data for discrepancies. 
 
Then we have Holochain. 
 
Holochain is an open source framework for developing Decentralize Applications (DApps) that run on peer-to-peer (connect user devices directly to each other in secure networks) instead of the Blockchain. 
 
It ensures security by utilizing mutual accountability whereby every device connected serves as a data host eliminating the need for cloud hosting. 
 
Also Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs). 
 
DAGs known as Directed Acyclic Graphs are a type of DLT data format that operates without blocks or a linear transaction sequence. Instead transactions are linked in a graph-like structure (like a family tree) allowing for parallel processing and potentially higher transaction throughput. Fantom, IOTA, Hedera Hashgraph and Nano are examples of DLT projects that utilize DAGs. 
 
These are some of the examples of Distributed Ledger Technology that exists today with each one having its own unique features. 
 
Advantages of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) 
 
Due to the decentralized nature of DLT, it is less vulnerable to system-wide failures and minimizes the risk of a single point of failure. 
 
It ensures the transparency of information, thereby encouraging accountability. 
 
The removal of intermediaries or middlemen from the process of data validation (checking for accuracy and integrity of data) and their replacement with consensus mechanisms such as Proof of Work (PoW) reduces transaction costs and boosts efficiency. 
 
DLTs are usually tamper-proof and nearly impossible to forge data due to their security measures, such as cryptographic algorithms. 
 
It encourages financial inclusion, as DLTs like the blockchain do not discriminate and offer access to a wide range of services with just internet access.</h3>

Disadvantages of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT)</h3>
<h3> 
One may argue that DLT's strength is a contributing cause to its weakness. 
 
DLTs ability to be transparent, public and immutable raises privacy concerns despite the anonymity it provides. Your account balance and transaction history can be viewed and tracked by any one without consent. 
 
Due to its complexity, DLT may be challenging to deploy and manage for businesses or people without specific knowledge and skills, and obtaining such expertise can be expensive. 
 
Because of improper regulations, DLTs like the blockchain have frequently been cited as having the potential to support criminal operations like aiding in the collection of ransoms. 
 
Despite being decentralized, DLT technologies such as Hedera Hashgraph are owned and operated by a governing council. 
 
The Hedera Hashgraph is overseen and managed by the 39-member Hedera Governing Council. 
 
This goes against what DLT normally stands for, which is decentralization, by bringing up the issues of centralization and reliance on a certain authority. 
 
Then there's the scalability problem, which is the capacity of a system to manage growing workloads without appreciably compromising performance. 
 
DLT may result in slower processing speeds and higher use costs as the number of participants and transactions rises.

In summary, DLT is important because of its potential to revolutionize various industries like Governance, Finance, Healthcare, Supply chain management, Real Estate, Cyber security, Video Game, and ultimately our daily lives. However this is majorly dependent on the speed of Adoption.</h3>
