Venture capital funding has declined significantly across the world in 2023, and though there were initial hopes that the nascency of the African tech ecosystem might mean it avoided too much damage, the growing size of the continentā€™s ā€œstartup graveyardā€ suggests that is not the case.

Venture capital funding took a hit globally in 2023, and Africa's tech startups have not been spared. Funding in the first nine months of the year was down 48% compared to 2022, painting a concerning picture for the continent. The lack of liquidity and difficulties in convincing investors are leading to closures, and the African "startup graveyard" is filling up.
