Big Tech on notice as regulators in Africa group to investigate their market conduct
Several competition watchdogs in Africa are collaborating to investigate the market conduct of global digital firms, including Google and Meta, raising concerns for these companies. The regulators from Kenya, Egypt, Mauritius, Nigeria, South Africa, Morocco, Gambia, and Zambia, along with the Common Markets of Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Competition Commission, have formed a working group to collaborate over concerns related to competition and consumer welfare in Africa. The group aims to collectively interrogate market conduct that has been investigated and remedied in other international jurisdictions but remains unattended in African markets. The regulators will make market inquiries collaboratively, but enforcement by member states will be done independently, according to their laws. The focus areas of the group will be on e-commerce, aggregator services, matchmaker services, digital advertising, fintech, and app stores.
