Buguard raises $500k in seed round to fund growth
Buguard, an Egyptian cybersecurity startup, has successfully raised $500,000 in a seed funding round. The investment was led by A15, a prominent venture capital firm in the MENA region, and also involved participation from angel investors. Buguard intends to utilize this funding to expand its team and enhance its product offerings, with a focus on product development, sales efforts, and forming strategic partnerships.
Established by Youssef Mohamed in 2021, Buguard specializes in offensive security services, safeguarding its clients against cyber threats originating from the dark web. These services encompass various aspects of cybersecurity, such as penetration testing, vulnerability assessment, phishing simulation, compromise assessment, threat intelligence, and red teaming.
Youssef Mohamed, Buguard's Founder and Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the significance of addressing dark web cyber threats, highlighting that any company is susceptible to such attacks and needs to be adequately prepared. Buguard's team consists of skilled security researchers and engineers, and its subscription-based SaaS product, known as Dark Atlas, offers a comprehensive solution that surpasses existing alternatives.
The rise in cyber threats in Africa, particularly due to the increased adoption of remote working, has raised concerns. A significant number of African businesses lack proper cybersecurity protocols, rendering them vulnerable to hacking, phishing, and malware attacks. Stolen or compromised credentials are often the primary cause of data breaches. Buguard aims to address these issues through its security services and Dark Atlas product.
Karim Beshara, a General Partner at A15, expressed confidence in Buguard's expertise and capabilities, emphasizing the growing importance of proactive cybersecurity measures to counter evolving cybercriminal tactics.
Youssef Mohamed revealed that Buguard's immediate focus is on strengthening its presence in the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) region, with plans to expand into Saudi Arabia in 2023. While Buguard already serves clients globally, the company is determined to further establish itself in the GCC region and harness its funding to support its ambitious growth trajectory.
