Hacker group targets Nigerian companies over ECOWAS threat of military action against Niger 👩🏾💻 💀
A hacker group known as Anonymous Sudan has targeted Nigerian companies in response to Nigeria's threat of military action against Niger. The pro-Russian hacktivist group issued a warning on Telegram and claimed to have launched a cyberattack against MTN Nigeria, the country's largest telco. Nigeria's National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) confirmed the attack on its digital infrastructure and advised financial service providers, government bodies, and telcos to prepare for more attacks. The hacker group's actions are motivated by Nigeria's proposed military intervention in Niger, and they accuse Nigeria of participating in a French colonialistic planned invasion of Niger. ECOWAS, led by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, has asked the coup plotters in Niger to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum within the week, threatening military action if the deadline is not met. Anonymous Sudan previously carried out Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks on Kenyan media, hospitals, universities, and businesses. The group's cyberattacks in Kenya have prompted Nigeria's Computer Emergency Response Team to release guidelines for preventing similar attacks within Nigeria. Cybersecurity remains a pressing concern in Africa, with the continent losing billions of dollars annually to cyberattacks, and many countries relying on foreign actors for critical information and cyber capabilities.
