Kenyan government claims Worldcoin illegally collected biometric data 🇰🇪
Kenya's ICT and digital economy cabinet secretary, Eliud Owalo, has revealed that Worldcoin, a company backed by the German organization Tools for Humanity, collected iris data illegally from nearly 400,000 Kenyans. The Kenyan government has questioned two cabinet ministers about Worldcoin's operations, licensing, and the handling of biometric data. Worldcoin had obtained a data controller certificate from the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC), but the certificate only confirmed the company's recognition in Kenya and did not grant permission to process user data. Despite this, Worldcoin collected biometric data and issued World tokens to affected Kenyans. The Kenyan government has sought court orders to preserve the collected data for an ongoing investigation into Worldcoin's activities, with results expected to be presented in parliament.
