Over 180 moderators are suing Sama and Meta for unlawful dismissal. The moderators claim that Meta and Sama failed to issue them with redundancy notices per the Kenyan law and that their terminal dues were hinged on signing nondisclosure agreements. They are also suing Majorel, Meta’s other content moderation partner in Africa, for alleged discrimination. The moderators claim that Majorel blacklisted Sama’s ex-employees.
Out-of-court negotiations between Meta, its former content review partner Sama, and content moderators in Kenya have collapsed. Over 180 moderators are suing Meta, Sama, and Majorel for unlawful dismissal, claiming they weren't issued redundancy notices as per Kenyan law and that their terminal dues were tied to nondisclosure agreements. The failed mediation indicates a lack of genuine effort from the parties to reach an out-of-court settlement. The moderators are seeking compensation for distress, the reversal of redundancy notices, mental health support, and recognition of their right to unionize.
Important: The labor dispute continues, and the case is headed to Kenya's employment and labor relations court.
