Mapping the growth trajectory of South Africa’s data centre industry
South Africa is expected to account for the bulk of the $5bn investment expected to enter the African data centre market by 2026, with $3.1bn expected to be invested in the country by that time, despite the national grid’s problems. Eskom’s difficulties have led to power outages, but this has not put off big tech companies such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Oracle, as well as data centre infrastructure companies such as Teraco, Africa Data Centers, and Convergence partners. Most of the biggest private companies in the country, as well as some government departments, have either migrated their data to public clouds or are in the process of doing so. South Africa houses 55 of Africa’s 121 data centres. However, according to experts, the country’s power supply issues are hindering the growth of data centres in the country.
