Meta Faces Calls for Restitution Fund as Facebook Accusations in Tigray Conflict Grow
Amnesty International has called on Meta to establish a restitution fund for Tigray war victims, with claims that Facebook contributed to the conflict, resulting in over 600,000 deaths and mass displacement. The rights group also urged Meta to expand content moderation capabilities in Ethiopia and acknowledge its role in human rights abuses during the war. A case in Kenya seeking a $1.6 billion settlement from Meta for its alleged role in the conflict is set to resume, with Amnesty International as an interested party. The report highlights how Facebook's algorithms amplified violence-inciting content targeting the Tigrayan community and normalizing hate and discrimination. The report accuses Meta of prioritizing engagement and profit over the welfare of affected communities and disregarding earlier warnings.
Amnesty International recommends reforms to Meta's content moderation and language classifier systems and an end to invasive data collection. It also calls on governments to enact and enforce laws and regulations to prevent and punish tech companies' abuses of human rights.
