Meta fails in bid to be removed as a party from an exploitation lawsuit against it and moderation partner Sama in Kenya
A Kenyan court has rejected Facebook's parent company, Meta, request to be removed from a lawsuit filed against it and Sama, its main subcontractor for content moderation. The two companies are accused of exploitation and union busting. Meta sought to distance itself from the case, claiming it's a foreign company and contracts Sama, but not an operating business in Kenya. However, the judge determined that Meta will remain as a party in the case due to some aspects of its operation in the country that make it liable. The court will issue further directions next month. Sama and Meta are being sued by a South African national claiming forced labor, exploitation, human trafficking, unfair labor relations, union busting and failure to provide adequate mental health support.
