Nigeria’s ChowCentral is one of three African startups in Y Combinator’s Summer 2023 batch 🍗 🍟
ChowCentral, a Nigerian food-delivery startup, has been accepted into Y Combinator's Summer class of 2023. The startup was initially called 500 Chow and started as a fun experiment during the COVID lockdown to deliver affordable meals and support underutilized restaurants. ChowCentral currently brings in over $80,000 in monthly revenue and operates a "central kitchen" model, partnering with underutilized commercial kitchens as fulfillment centers. Customers can order meals from different restaurants through the app, pay with their in-app wallet, and track their orders in real-time. ChowCentral will join a competitive food delivery landscape in Africa, competing with Jumia Food, Bolt Eats, Glovo, and AreaChops.
Y Combinator's interest in food delivery startups in Africa is evident from its previous selections. In the 2022 summer batch, two other Lagos-based delivery startups, Chowdeck and FoodCourt, were selected, both of which have seen significant growth. Y Combinator's experience in backing DoorDash and other food delivery startups may explain its continued enthusiasm for this sector.
