SA startup founders tackle EV mobility amidst weak national grid
Despite South Africa's ongoing power challenges and national provider Eskom's problems, electric vehicle (EV) start-ups are operating in the country. Load shedding has both discouraged the market and created business opportunities for renewable sources of electricity and storage. The opportunities for using vehicle batteries as storage for homes and businesses are being viewed as a significant opportunity. However, it has been difficult to convince consumers to rely on electric mobility due to the pressing power challenges. Education has been identified as key to counter this bias in customers' minds. Green Scooter claims to have produced a highway-capable electric vehicle with an advanced electric system, while Zimi Charge provides charging infrastructure for delivery, logistics, rentals, e-hailing, and technical services. The success of EV mobility in South Africa depends on the sector's ability to build indigenous products and solutions, which require support from external players such as the government, and to educate Africans to adopt indigenous EV solutions. The acceleration of climate change and its effects are also seen as opportunities for the growth of EV mobility in South Africa in the future.
