Somalia has shut down crypto-friendly messaging app Telegram and gambling site 1XBet, while cryptocurrency investments aren’t banned. Somalia’s Ministry of Communications and Technology (MOCT) officially announced on Aug. 20 that the government is shutting down Telegram, TikTok and 1XBet.

Somalia has banned the messaging app Telegram, the social media app TikTok, and the online betting site 1XBet. The country's Ministry of Communications and Technology (MOCT) stated that the move was aimed at preserving Somali society's culture, as these platforms were seen as having a negative impact on the country's youth and contributing to bad habits. The decision also aims to limit the spread of indecent content and propaganda. The MOCT minister ordered these platforms to suspend their operations in Somalia by August 24, warning of legal consequences for non-compliance. While the ban doesn't seem to affect cryptocurrency investments, it's unclear whether it will have any implications for the country's overall stance on cryptocurrency adoption.
