Busani Moyo, a 47-year-old copywriter from Johannesburg, South Africa, has become an Upwork expert, working up to 20 hours a day to sustain his career. He turned to gig work in 2016, facing low pay rates but earning in U.S. dollars, which has benefited him due to favorable exchange rates. Despite connecting with 105 employers and working with tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft, Moyo constantly hunts for new gigs as they rarely last long. He embraces AI tools like ChatGPT to stay competitive but fears AI could eventually replace content creators like him.
