Why Safaricom, east Africa's biggest telecom, is getting sued by its customers
Kenyan telecommunications company Safaricom is facing two major lawsuits from customers demanding accountability. The company has been criticised for the credibility of its mobile overdraft facility, Fuliza, and cases of SIM swap fraud targeting Fuliza limits. Three Kenyan M-Pesa users are seeking $2.38bn in damages from the telco and Vodafone Group for “predatory lending practices” and “charging exorbitant interest rates” through its unregistered banking services, in breach of the country’s Banking Act. CBK, the central bank of Kenya, has failed to regulate Safaricom's activities. Meanwhile, Safaricom has been accused of not doing enough to address SIM swap fraud, which has seen customers lose millions.
